About
Nerds of a Feather is a regular segment on the Triple J Breakfast Show with Robby, Marieke and The Doctor.
Apart from bombarding the national breakfasting public with nerd fetish tidbits and arbitrary humor, Paul Verhoeven (the host of N.O.T.F.) will also be blogging here on anythying and everything that tickles his fancy, along with fellow bloggers and humorists Luke Ryan (a writer/comic who looks a bit like Moby), and Ned Dwyer (who designed this site and by no means has a WOW character called Manchux).
Paul Verhoeven is a radio broadcaster/writer. After finishing his bachelor of film studies, he fled to Melbourne where he wrote and co-hosted Planet Nerd on Melbourne-based station Channel 31. The Green Guide (in The Age) referred to him as ‘a star in the making’, which was embarrasing but ultimately very flattering. Since early 2008, he has hosted Nerds of a Feather, a (roughly) half hour segment on the Triple J Breakfast Show with Robbie, Marieke and the Doctor; think The Colbert Report, only far, far less coherent. He also writes for the Triple J publictation Jmag, and hosts the Middawn show every week. He conducts interviews/question and answer sessions for Cinema Nova in Melbourne, and has recently interviewed Viggo Mortensen, Philippe Petit, and Dylan Moran (twice). He enjoys swordfights on the beach.
So if your primal nerd/pop culture urges need to be violently and regularly satiated, this is the place to be.

Reverse-Nerdism?:
Every time Robby, Marieke or The Doctor use 1337sp33k (ironically or otherwise) on national radio, God finances another Uwe Boll ‘film’ and a part of me dies.
They need to be goatse’d immediately.

You have the Daily Show and the Colbert Report as your ‘Daily Reads’. Will you forgive me if i use that as a segue to talk about my blog where Jon and Stephen are depicted as pro-wrestlers.

Not at all, I’m headed there right now to have a read!

Hey guys,
Ive been told by many that Im the female version of Paul. Though I tend to smile all the time, say naughty ambiguous lines (that often don’t make sense or have anything to do with the situation at hand) and lack the art of putting a good joke together.
Maybe we are very similar!?

Do you also tend to laugh out of context? If so, we may very well be one and the same person! Handy hint: Laughing during The Notebook is not a good idea, especially in a cinema full of people either crying or trying to cry.

Long time listener, first time reader. You are hilarious.
9 Paul // Aug 15, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Cheers Donna, I try. Well, sometimes I just let the caffeine make me say weird shit. Either way, much appreciated!

How many people that listen to nerd of a feather are actually so? I must say that I do get most of what you say and its good to know that i’m not the only one that talks and has other people not have a clue what your saying.
Nice.

I have to confess. I am not ‘nerdy’ nor do I have any idea what the hell World of Warcraft is… but I have grown to love your crazy nerd banter on Triple J enough so that I now download the podcast & visit this website… mmm… maybe I am a little nerdy afterall.
12 Ben // Sep 25, 2008 at 11:36 am
Hey guys, I’ve been a fan since the great Warglaives of Azzinoth swindle story dropped on Triple J a while back. Want you to know that reading about the delay on the CERN doom machine and an unborn Alaskan makes my day that much better.
13 DeeDee // Sep 25, 2008 at 11:38 am
How the hell does N.O.T.F. stand for Nerds of a Feather?? haha And why hasn’t Marieke pointed this out yet!
14 paul // Sep 25, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Cheers guys, we’ll keep writing if you keep reading.
Re the acronym, very good point! I’ll have a word.

Hey Paul, I would have to say I am a partial nerd, perhaps around the semi-hardcore gamer level (if there is such as thing). Just dropping by to say I love the show and now a first time blogger. A quick question Socom: Confrontation or Call of Duty 5?
16 paul // Oct 9, 2008 at 7:08 am
Call of Duty 5! Mainly because I don’t lnow Socom all that well. Lot’s of my friends are FPS afficianados, but in that field, I don’t think you can beat Half Life 2 (and all it’s associated projects).

Paul, i love your radio show, you are one of the most clever and whitty people on radio. Above all, you are original, something difficult to attain in this day of so much rubbish on commercial radio…Keep up the great work..You are destined for greatness…
18 Daria // Nov 11, 2008 at 9:28 pm
id like to say im not a geek but feel that would be a *slight* inaccuracy – wondering if you’re bash.org type of lads? i always found that a good source for the inane, inappropriate and downright perverse
im aware there is little to none carefactor (potentially around the /carefactor=0.34%) but i felt it my duty to remind you boys of our roots. nothing beats the simplicity of bash and salad fingers – the best part being now there will be randoms googling such treasures!!!

Caught the final Nerds on the j’s this morning, and am so glad you mentioned the minority of the Nerd world – the Rev Head Nerd. I live with one, okay, okay I’ll admit it! I married one!
Not only can I fall asleep to the dulcet tones of my beloved telling me about the cake is a lie or that spawn was….oh crap I zoned out, but I also get to hear about fuel injection cut-offs and chrome plated rods…shit no, that was Grease…
Really, honestly, the RevNerd does exist – I’ll take a photo of his lair (Revhead) and his pit of dispair (nerd) and you can see for yourself….
20 Erin // Dec 2, 2008 at 4:51 pm
perhaps its really Nerds of The Feather….but that just sounds a little creepy
21 Aegis // Dec 4, 2008 at 2:44 pm
lol erin, everytime he mentions he did something great in game, just call “HAX!”
22 Aegis // Dec 4, 2008 at 2:45 pm
PS: Paul, you need to get your web person doing something about your name+google – trying to find this site was impossible without Marieke’s mention the other day
23 paul // Dec 4, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Really? Ergh, wouldn’t want to kill off any traffic… I’ll have a word to Manchux. I mean, Ned.
24 Pete G // Dec 11, 2008 at 11:51 am
Man i cant wait till nerds of a feather comes back on tripple j next year it is hilarious and so is your site! keep up the wow posts they make me laugh.
25 paul // Jan 2, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Thanks so much! The show will be weekly this year, so there’ll be literally twice as much insanity on-air. Also, I’m doing the mid-dawn show several times a week, and as such I’ll be a tad more unhinged on the breakfast show.
If only that were possible.
26 Anthony // Jan 13, 2009 at 2:59 pm
So I had this great idea about something to write on you site when I got into work today… then I couldn’t find where to write it… And when i did find somewhere I forgot what it was. But then my net access crashed and while it was resetting itself or whatever I remembered it and realised it wasn’t that great an idea… So I wrote this instead…
Don’t blame me it’s been a long day at work and my brain has turned to jelly… Good thing your blog is here to keep me looking busy at my computer…
Anyway, you wanted a cool radio nickname like “Dools”… Why not just use “Hoves” or whatever you got called at school… Because surely NOONE got called “Paul” and Verhoeven has to many syllables for a high schooler to say.
Nice work on the 12-6… except for the fact I’m back at work now and no longer sitting up all night to play Fallout3 and therefore I’m not able to listen to you.
Also more stories on Lego, lego is awesome
27 paul // Jan 13, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Hoves… Hmm. Luke thought “The Paul Show” had a certain simplistic ring to it. As for lego, fear not! There shall be more! MORE, I SAY!

Big kudos on ‘Nerds .. ‘ Paul … and if I was an insomniac (or wasn’t a pharmacist by trade with access to all the zolpidem I need) … I would like to listen to your ridiculously slotted radio stint. Luke … definitely coming to your show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival (Peter Mac recently tried their best for my dad). Oh BTW thank you for putting me on to ‘the guild’ …. Felicia …. oh yeah. Also …. ummm… (shift awkwardly from foot to foot) … what realm is your guild on? (I’m a partially geared lvl 80 BM hunter on Nagrand). … rolll on the 3.1 patch … Vehicles! Oh S@#t … I AM a nerd.

Greetings.
I enjoy Nerds of a Feather immensely. It should be on every day.
Now after that flattery, let me write an article for the site!!
I think you should consider my proposition, because command hordes of guinea pigs and I could release their furry wrath upon thee.
Hmmmm I realise the last sentence isn’t exactly the best bargaining strategy…
But if by some strange turn of events, you are actually interested in my proposition, email me: pants-r-so-overrated@hotmail.com.
From the human Saj’abar,
Erinys.

Excellent show Luke …. I laughed, I cried … (at the show I laughed … when the front passenger side window ‘fell out’ of the door of my car as I was driving it out of the public car park on Flinders St after the show … that was when the crying started). Hope the show is a sell out.

Hey Paul, great show this morning!
I was going to tell you about something great but I forgot what it was. Anyway, a few days ago I was sitting on a park bench, minding my own business when a dog snuck up behind me and licked me on the neck. This troubled me so I ran home quickly and had a shower. Then one night a had a dream where the dog was kissing me, I woke up terrified. A few days later I was walking home from school and I saw the dog, sleeping in the gutter. Revenge tastes so sweet, I thought as I licked the dogs neck.

Hi darling. Do you think that there are too many f### words being used. I dont mind the odd bit of swearing but upon checking this morning I was overwhelmed, even though I am a very open minded and tolerant mother. Love You. Keep up the great writing (minus so many F###) words.

Hey Luke … when are you going to do a double team thing with Paul on the j’s? Not that Paul isn’t doing a great job on the weekends. “Paul … you are doing a great job in the mornings.” I just can’t help but feel the two of you would have a symbiotic effect, creating a ’super duo’ whose total was so much more than the sum of their two individual selves. I know someone that knows someone who could probably make Tom and Alex disappear … You guys could be the new Tom and Alex … but with intellect.

You must be getting many calls, I can’t get through. Anyway, I chose the song “You don’t know what love is (You just do as you’re told)” by The White Stripes. Thought about Tool, but their songs are too long, The Living End would have been great but the particular song I liked was never released as a single… But please, if you don’t read this comment today while you are on air, play this lovely Christian song at home on your ipod or CD player or some such nonsense.
