DECIDE! (My top ten songs, for the JJJ Hottest 100 of all time)

June 23rd, 2009 · 20 Comments

Ok. Voting closes on the 28th, so I’ve pulled my finger out, and here they are. My top ten songs of all time. Bear in mind that these are my personal favourites, not the ones I think will realistically win. Also, I had to leave out lots of Fushitsusha, Set Fire to Flames, Ryuichi Sakamoto and LOADS of jazz because none of it can be played on radio. So here they are. Oh, and to be deliberately difficult, I’ve got 12 here, and the last one will be cut by the end of tonights show. AND they’re out of order for now. Cue suspense!

Tryouts for the Human Race – Sparks
Oh Yeah – Can
In Limbo – Radiohead
I’m Not In Love – Talking Heads
Blackout – David Bowie
Unison - Bjork
Hope There’s Someone – Antony and the Johnsons
America – Simon and Garfunkel
The Flying Club Cup – Beirut
T.B. Sheets – Van Morrison
52 Girls – The B52’s
Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) – The Beach Boys
La Ritournelle – Sebastian Tellier

I have to respect how… different (yet still great) these are.

Hopefully at least one will make it!

That’s my favourite Antony and the Johnsons song!
    Great list. Here’s mine:

@Richoad: Thanks mate, glad you dug it! Again, personal as opposed to popular choices. :D

@Vijay: Cheers! Such a great track. I was half expecting you to down some Eno era Bowie! Excellent list, by the way.

    Oooh, B52s. Nice. :)

All this Hottest 100 of all time just shows me how influenced I am by singles. So many of mine would wind up being tracks that were singles at one time or another.

no Nickleback? never made it as a wise man? couldn’t cut it as a poor man stealing?

  • 6 paul // Jun 24, 2009 at 12:07 am

    Milos, I’d rather shit blood.

I may know some of these if I hear them, but none of them – not a single one – could I place based on the name. I should know the Simon and Garfunkel seeing as how I rather like a bit of old-school S&G, but everytime I try to work “america” into a song, somehow it morphs into Toto – Africa.
    Woo! Toto!

Now that I think of it…does voting for the 100 Greatest Songs of *All Time* mean you could vote for Mozart or Beethoven or those cavemen who first smacked rocks together rhythmically?

Oh, Jesus, this is hard. I’ll try and narrow down a list. I assume we can only pick one track to represent a favourite artist?

Anyone who picks a Nickleback song as the top ten of anything other than top ten annoying shitstorms will be put into my top ten of annoying shitstorms.

Paul after reading the lists on the JJJ website (which you should clearly be one), I think you should write a sentence for each song saying why you think it deserves to be number one.

Not only is In Limbo not the best Radiohead song, it’s not even the best Radiohead song on that album. You’re living in a fantasy. One day you’re going to look at this list and cry about how wrong you were about this. Now excuse me while I go and listen to every Radiohead song and try to convince myself which one is the best.

Good list. Everything is good apart from Bjork but thats only because i’m moraly opposed to batshit insane icelandic women.

Nice, nice. I especially like the Talking Heads inclusion.

  • 14 Aqualec // Jun 24, 2009 at 10:57 am

Nice, very nice. I like those Bowie and B52 songs.

Nickleback should be burnt in the fiery pits of hell.

I can’t help but look over mine and find it blindingly unoriginal and slightly like what my dad would choose… oh god, I’ve become my parents:
    Radiohead – Paranoid Android
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
    Tori Amos – Winter
    Pulp – Common People
    Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
The Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You
    Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights
Cat Stevens – Matthew & Son
    Johnny Cash – Hurt
    Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

    Just voted.
I wanted other stuff but couldn’t get rid of any of these ( I spent a day playing songs off against each other on my stereo), so they stuck.

    Stone roses- fools gold
Lemonheads- if i could talk i’d tell you
    Oasis- wonderwall
    Jeff buckley- last goodbye
    George Harrison-here comes the sun
    Whitlams- blow up the pokies
    Gotye-hearts a mess
    Supergrass- alright
    Fatboy slim- praise you
    Inxs- never tear us apart

Now that I look at it, it is a little wimpy. Should have thrown some Rage in there. I don’t even like Rage that much. It just would have made me look less wimpy.

  • 17 Destructor // Jun 25, 2009 at 2:40 pm

According to the email they just sent me, I just voted:

Nine Inch Nails – Leaving Hope
    Regurgitator – Black Bugs
Beatles, The – A Day in the Life
Crowded House – Don’t Dream Its Over
    David Bowie – Queen Bitch
    Michael Jackson – Billie Jean
    Muse – Butterflies & Hurricanes
Postal Service, The – Such Great Heights
    Shihad – Pacifier
    Smashing Pumpkins, The – 1979

Although I must say whittling past the final 20 was FUCKING HARD. Radiohead proved too difficult to choose a single defining track.

  • 18 Destructor // Jun 26, 2009 at 10:01 am

I just want to say I picked Billie Jean as my top ten BEFORE MJ died. I’m not jumping on a bandwagon or anything. I hope his death doesn’t swing the vote in his favour.

  • 19 Hel // Jun 29, 2009 at 9:42 am

I voted twice. Is that evil?
I couldn’t live with my wimpy list. Second set was:
    Primal scream-Rocks
    Blur- song 2
    Portishead-glory box
    Radiohead- paranoid android
    The verve- bitter sweet symphony
Toots and the Maytals- Funky Kingston
    Mars volta- the widow
    U2-Sunday Bloody Sunday
Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls- Dumb Things
    Silverchair- Tomorrow

    Wimpiness wiped. A bit.
