Star Trek XI: Awesome pants.

Yes, the new Star Trek film has premiered, and there have also been various press screenings. So in spite of the fact that it doesn’t come out until May 7th (I believe), there are individuals who have seen it. Myself and Luke are two of those individuals.

Now I’m not going to give anything away, because I’m not willing to be kidney-punched for a straight month in the nerd equivalent of the Hague. But I will say this: go and read Star Trek Countdown. It’s a four part graphic novel that links post-Nemesis Trek continuity and the beginning of the new film, and not only is it a well told story, it also fixes much of the profoundly stupid shit Nemesis did to Star Trek in general. And it’s considered canon, too! After the jump you’ll see probably the awesomest thing a Trek fan could see. They really did make things right with this one.

It is also worth noting that five minutes into the film, Luke said “is this the one with all the Jawas?”

Mmm. The issues are also available as an iPhone app.
Although it doesn’t “Fix” as in forget. Which I wanted it to. No it fixes as in follows that whole “Path to 2409″ thing from the Star Trek Online pages.

I haven’t seen the film yet, but your enthusiasm for it has given me great hope where previously all I felt was a slowly creeping dread. Take this to mean that I have great faith in your taste- I don’t think I’ve seen you put a foot wrong yet in terms of liking things that are good.

Has Countdown been released as a single-edition print for me to grab at Minotaur yet, or do I have to wait a while. I must say I really like the idea of turning the whole Star Trek story, from the original series to Nemesis, into a Möbius strip that folds back on itself to start again. It’s interesting and somehow satisfying to me in concept- I will wait to see if it works in execution.

@Destructor It isn’t even necessarily like that, but I shan’t spoil anything. The comics are in TPB form at Minotaur, but I think I got the last one so make sure you call ahead. I will say this: the film can’t do what it purports to do (reboot) without making huge swathes of Trek never even happen (and I do mean huge, ie, most of Trek) so they’ve found a solution which anyone who knows Trek intimately will have no problem with.

God i love working in a comic book store :)

Got this the other day while at work, and thought it was a great story and excellent lead-in for the film. Art was pretty good too.

@paul So, and I appreciate I am putting you in a difficult position in terms of not spoiling anything for me, but my assumption for the film is that it is, in fact, a new timeline generated by some kind of time travel event at the beginning of the story, and while TNG et al may not be ‘wiped out’, they implicitly takes place in another timeline (not exactly a new thing for a lot of Trek).

Yeah, just called: they sold out. You Klingon Bastard, you’ve killed my fun!

@destructor: Actually not really! Just wait and see, we’ll talk it out once you’ve finished the movie. :D

    URGHHH!

THis ‘Star Trek COuntdown’ thing just reminded me of all the very worst aspects of Star Trek – the parts that remind me why i ended up hating it and being glad when it was cancelled.

I can just picture the writing process for it:

‘okay, which old character should turn up next? ‘
    ‘hmmm, how about Worf!’
‘yeah, let’s make him now working for the Klingons, that won’t sound far fetched’
‘and let’s bring back Data, cos, you know, we want to’
‘yeah, death doesn’t mean anything anyway’
‘and let’s not forget to overload the plot with technobabble about crystals, singularities and blackholes so the audience won’t know or care about the plot’
‘and let’s name Spock’s ship ‘Jellyfish’, cos i once saw a jellyfish!’
    ‘wow, neato!’

    groan.

aw, don’t you just want to pat luke on the head and say “you’re pretty”.

sit the man down before he hurts himself.

I can’t even remember what happened in Nemesis. That says how good it was.

Andy, don’t be such a spoilsport. Its years after TNG finished and we all like to know where our favourite characters are.

I was having a chat with mates over the weekend bout TNG and how good the series was etc. The one thing all of us couldn’t remember was what happened to Guinan? I know she was in Generations, but is that it?

  • 14 Destructor // Apr 29, 2009 at 2:07 pm

She was in the wedding scene in Nemesis, and I think in the deleted scenes she implies she has been married on multiple occasions, but that was it her story essentially ‘concluded’ in Generations.

I find Nemesis confusing, because it has a lot of really good elements (Shinzon was good, the ramming-of-the-Enterprise was good… okay actually it only had two good elements) but for some reason never gelled into a good movie. A lot of the cast blame the director, who apparently knew nothing about Trek and thought Geordi was an alien. Should have let Frakes do it again, he was alright.

Saw Star Trek last night and i gotta say it was Awesome! I wanna go watch again!

  • 16 Willian! // May 16, 2009 at 11:29 pm

I saw it today, and ‘awesome pants’ are the exact right words!
Perfect in every way, except the big red monster which chases Kirk, could easily have been made with Spore. lol. I’m joking.
It was great! Everyone must see it!

Can I simply say what a relief to find someone who truly knows what they’re talking about on the internet.
