I started to get a little tired of Paul strutting about the place, crowing loudly and clawing the seeds on his shed floor in triumph over his nationally broadcast radio gig, so I thought “I’m going to have a shot at this whole entertainment malarkey. I’m going to put on a show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival! But first, I need a hook… Wait a second! I have cancer! That’s hilarious! I should do a show about having cancer! The jokes just write themselves!
Knock knock!
Who’s there?
Tumour.
Tumour who?
Tumour weeks to live!………..
That joke probably shouldn’t go in the show.”
And it won’t! (I love it how I assume that merely by adding an exclamation mark I can exculpate myself from mordantly depressing comedy). But yes, this is probably all a little confusing and controversial for you, so here’s a quick video I made to ease the concerns of the confronted consumer (sometimes when I alliterate, I hate myself).
So, basically the show is about my experiences with cancer as both an 11 and 22 year old, and what it’s like having cancer in this day and age. And that day and age. Quite evidently the answer for both is ‘a barrel of laughs’. No, really. There is a funny side. I promise.
‘Luke’s Got Cancer’ is happening at the Lunch Room in the Melbourne Town Hall from the 2nd to the 26th of April, running at 10:45 pm from Thursdays to Saturdays and 9:45 pm on Sundays. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for concession, and if you come on one of the first two nights you can watch the show for the measly sum of $10.
More importantly though, I’m running the show as a charitable venture and ALL proceeds are going to the good people at the Peter MacCallum Foundation, the fundraising wing of Australia’s premier cancer research and treatment facility. So if you are in Melbourne, it would be simply swell if you came down and brought everyone you’ve ever met to see the show, including that shifty-eyed dude that started talking to you about cheese varieties on the tram last night. It cam be your good deed for the year. Although, I must admit, I’ve stipulated that the money go directly toward sarcoma research, so, really, I do have a vested interest in the success of the show…
Tickets can (and should) be booked here or from the handy link on the left sidebar. My thanks in advance.
/Luke

I notice that you are wearing the same t-shirt in the poster and in the video. Did you spend all your money on medication?
(Ugh I feel awful now!)

Was this poster inspired by Ripley (aka Sigourney Weaver in /Alien/)? http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n246/sicrowe/194061536_b3f9ac71b8.jpg
