Last night on Doctor Who Confidential, the bombshell was dropped: the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor is to be played by Matt Smith. Matt who? Ha ha. The problem here isn’t that he’s unknown, because the very term “unknown” is a misnomer. Everyone is known in certain circles, and by all account Smith has been very well received in England (to be fair, the English enjoy Toad in the Hole, which sounds like a terrible disease, but is in fact… let’s just say it’s diseas-y). The problem, if indeed it turns out to be one, is his age. He’s 26.
That’s MY AGE.
Jealousy aside (and my jealousy at present could fill the Lusitania), i find it hard to imagine how someone so young could portray not only a timelord, but THE timelord. The Doctor is roughly a thousand years old, and has been through wars, exile, rebirths and other countless tragedies. He carries the intellect and experience of centuries. How will they fuse Smith’s seeming inexperience and this seemingly impossible cache of narrative?
THEY CAN’T! I CAN! TAKE ME, YOU FUCKERS, I HAVE THE CHOPS!
Ahem.

Two words: Steven Moffat.
I give a little girlie squeal every time I remember he’s running the show now.

A fair point, Brett. Also, Steven said it was Matt’s “new take” on the character which blew him away. Give us that, plus prime Moffat scripts, plus Judi Dench as an assistant, and I’ll be happy!

judi dench as the assistant? isn’t there supposed to be sexual frisson between the doctor and the assistant?

LOL…Dench as companion? That would be interesting. A nice twist on the older-doc-younger-gal motif.
I am excited by the news, honestly…as it’s an actor I’ve never seen before! I love Tennant dearly and will totally miss him…but I love how the show reinvents itself to an extent with every new doctor.
So you two are both 26…Marieke Hardy and I are both 32…what does that mean?

Brett, you said it exactly. If Steven’s happy, we’re all happy.
Russell T Davies was gushing as well. While not unusual for him, he did do a good job on casting 9 and 10.
As an aside I finished reading Russells book “A Writers Tale” or whatever it was called in the xmas break.
I now have a greater respect for the man, even though he did make a mortal Doctor clone who went off with Rose… Bleeerrrgghh!
Well worth a read.

The rose thing: EW.
However, Moffat could make the show AMAZING. His work has always been really dense and beautifully constructed, and he’s never been afraid to shy away from heavily conceptual stuff. Fingers crosses he and Smith kick some serious ass…

They are made of dalekinium which is between Fimo and fibreglass on the Periodic Table of Elements.

Paul, who would you suggest for the role of a 1,000 year old person? We all know what happened to Richard Harris.
P.S. I’m with Luke, never watched an episode or boarded a… what do they call it, a Tardis?

Dalekinium is just the material used for the heavy outer shielding, most of the rest is a combination of Unobtanium and Rarenium.
