To the holodeck!

October 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Remember on Star Trek: The Next Generation when Lt. Barclay had made all those twisted fantasy programmes on the Enterprise holodeck in which he could fulfill all of his sickest dreams involving the three musketeers, Wesley eating pie and Troi talking dirty on a swing?

Yeah, me neither.

Anyway, turns out the holodeck could become a reality, thanks to the Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display. A 3D forcefield is projected into the air that essentially allows you to touch virtual objects. If you’re a boring asshole, you could probably use this technology to project a virtual keyboard (which would actually be pretty cool; you could project animal from the muppets and type on his teeth. Or, you know, not). To be fair, even the developers of the technology have touted the merits of abusing the AUTD for assorted shenanigans, such as virtual sex. Does this mean that ten years from now you’ll be able to have a butter-smearing contest with fifty clones of Megan Fox whilst the two old dudes from The Muppet Show provide amusing commentary?

I sure hope so.

Do you think if this holodeck technology becomes real I will have legal rights over my likeness? Like, obviously no-one will want to recreate ME in the holodeck to bone, but will Megan Fix get 5c everytime some Transformers nerd bones her virtual self?
