Light blub (not a typo)

October 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Dutch designer Pieke Bergmans has created a series of “light blubs”, bizarre creations which apparently satirise the incandescent light bulb, which, let’s be honest, had it coming. What were they thinking, lighting our bathrooms and operating theatres?* Bergmans posits that a “light blub” is:

“…a light bulb that has gone way out of line. Infected by the dreaded Design Virus, these Blubs have taken on all kinds of forms and sizes you wouldn’t expect from such well behaving and reliable little products”.

…Which is all well and good. But I don’t see why she feels the need to justify these munted, billowing bulbs. They look like fat, incandescent marshmallows. What is there to explain? She’s gone and combined my two most ardent loves: confectionary and lamp design.

*Odds are, they weren’t thinking anything. I could be wrong, though.
