Jay Walker’s library. OMFG.

October 9th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Jay Walker, founder of Priceline, is my new God (bye, Shiva!), and here’s why: his personal library is the greatest thing I have ever seen. From first editions of Chaucer, to the chandelier from Die Another Day, to a framed napkin which Franklin D. Roosevelt jotted his plan for winning WW2, this place has EVERYTHING. The instruction manual for the Saturn V rocket, intact dinosaur fossils, and a truly epic collection of literature and cultural doodads. This might give you an idea of the design philophy behind the library:

Walker commissioned decorative etched glass, dynamic lighting, and even a custom soundtrack that sets the tone for the cerebral adventures hidden in this cabinet of curiosities. “I said to the architect, ‘Think of it as a theater, from a lighting and engineering standpoint,’” Walker says. “But it’s not a performance space. It’s an engagement space.”

Imagine if John Waters, Matthew Barney and Citizen Kane got together and pooled their collections of weird shit. Now imagine you had it all IN YOUR HOUSE. Does your brain have an erection yet?

But does it have shadows that eat people?

    That would be awesome.

The only difference between this library and the one in my nerd wet dreams is that this one does not conatin (as far as we know) shrunken heads, and a taxidermed six legged calf. Add in a splash of forteana and scha wing!
