I could spend the better part of this article telling you all that women game, and that it’s not unusual. But I BELIEVE that society (as the new indie-nerd fetishists emerge) has already accepted this. I would therefore like to discuss the next step of this heightened awareness:
Premise: Women gamers are socially active, independent (not subjective), cool (subjective) and plentiful (that’s just simple statistics).
Some simple facts:
To play an MMORPG, you need the internet and a personal computer. There are many reasons why the younger generation has the internet – let’s not delve. But why don’t we (on a whim) assume that these two things are ‘normal’ (as defined by society today).
To play an MMORPG there is NO minimum play time. Spell it out? Okay.
A Myth Dismissed: You CAN prepare dinner, go for a drink, use the restroom and talk on the phone after logging off, in fact, you can play for 15 mins and log off… in fact, you can even log BACK on after a 5 hr rendez-vous at the pub. Finding: Gaming is not exclusive to your time (whether you choose to make it the sole focus of your time, as many are prone to doing, is your call).
To play a MMORPG, one needs to be relatively co-ordinated and generally good with communication (research the concept of raids and instances yourself: I don’t have the time to explain, I’m meeting a friend for coffee after my run which I’ll accomplish while I do my washing, after I have my healthy breakfast- see above).
Having viewed these facts, I can quite clearly see that none are gender specific… Can you? Put simply, If you like to live an enriched, technology savvy life, filled with a variety of activities, are co-ordinated and have the social skills that allow you to communicate in an intelligible way, you have the distinguished high probability of being a gamer.
Ipso Facto, the high percentage of women that play (roughly 38%) is most likely due to the wonderful culmination of all these traits. As a result, that girl with the enigmatic smile that you glimpsed the other day JUST MAY HAVE BEEN THE ORC WARLOCK THAT BITCH-SLAPPED YOU TEN TIMES IN WARSONG GULCH LAST NIGHT!

I’m just trying to add some weight to your girl-gamers-exist thing. Unfortunately in many people’s heads “girl-gamer” resides somewhere between “toothfairy” and “dropbears” in the realms of probability.

I was leveling my little pally and some random asked if I was looking for a guild. They were polite, used punctuation and spelling so I said “sure!”. The GM and half the officers are girl-gamers along with half of our newly formed kara group.
Btw our kara group downed the first two bosses first shot and after server maintenance we continued to down those and the next two easily. Much smoother and quicker without the e-peen.
